Blood of Vengeance Universe

What is the story about?

“Blood of Vengeance” is a twenty-minute action narrative short film. Set in a world of a secret Society where triads rule, two rival brothers find themselves entangled in a deadly feud over the tragic death of their sister, Juliet. One is Raven, the young Chinese heir to a powerful secret Society run by the Yip family. The other is Ren, a German man adopted into the Yip family at seven and trained to be the family’s deadly prodigy.

As secrets unravel and grievances are revealed, the stage is set for an epic showdown in which the fate of the underworld hangs in the balance. Drawing inspiration from classic HK action cinema and the adrenaline-fueled action of John Wick, our film promises nonstop thrills and jaw-dropping fight sequences that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

Introducing the Yip Family

In the heart of bustling Hong Kong, concealed behind the glittering façade of towering skyscrapers, lies the world of the Yip family—a name that commands both reverence and fear within the underworld. With deep ties to the Society, the Yips have forged their own distinct path.

What inspired you to write Blood of Vengeance?

As a child, I was captivated by Hong Kong and Chinese action cinema and TV dramas, which helped me connect with my cultural roots as an Australian-born Chinese (ABC). My grandfather, "Gong, gong," was a fan of TVB dramas and Cantonese opera, and despite language barriers, these shows became a special bond for us and aided my understanding of Chinese.

In 2020, working on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was a transformative experience. It reignited my artistic passion, which I had suppressed for a pharmacy career, and allowed me to work with incredible talents like Michelle Yeoh and Simu Liu. This experience inspired me to write Blood of Vengeance, a project that evolved from a playful challenge with Lazarus Ho into a deep exploration of vengeance.

When I met Theo Trevena, his love for martial arts and Asian culture led me to adapt a character for him. By 2024, connecting with a group of Gen Z filmmakers who shared a passion for diversity and Hong Kong cinema, we began working on Blood of Vengeance. With director Jamie Pan, who shares my Chinese and Taiwanese heritage, we aimed to create a film that authentically represents Chinese culture and pays homage to the legacy of Hong Kong and Chinese action cinema.

What is your vision for Blood of Vengeance?

Blood of Vengeance is a film about love, forgiveness, and vengeance, the three most unforgiving and polar emotions humans can feel. At its core, it is a very self-contained story about the ever-so-vibrant Chinese culture and leans closely towards the Wuxia martial arts style of Hong Kong action cinema.

My name is Jamie Pan; I am the director of the action drama film Blood of Vengeance. I am a professionally trained filmmaker and a practising action stuntman focusing on storytelling in the film medium. Visual storytelling is just as important to me as filmmaking, a visual medium; audiences must see it to believe it. Since a young age, I have been drawn to Hong Kong martial arts and Wuxia cinema, having watched numerous productions featuring well-known action actors like Sammo Hung, Jet Li, and Jackie Chan.

I just finished wrapping up another big action production, A Punch for a Buck, and I told myself that my next film should incorporate Chinese culture and language, honouring Hong Kong and Chinese cinema. Well, here we are! I first came across Blood of Vengeance from a group of like-minded filmmaking individuals and quickly met the story’s writer – Joanne Chang. From day one, I saw Joanne as a creatively charged person passionate about martial arts and Asian culture. We started talking and brainstorming around the script, and now, it is ready to proceed to the next stage – entering production.
